Ford Transit Custom H15 DRL LED bulbs

Ford Transit Custom H15 DRL LED bulbs

The Ford Transit Custom uses a single H15 bulb to handle both the daytime running light (DRL) and main beam functions. If your DRL has stopped working, is flickering, or your main beam lacks power or has failed, the H15 bulb is almost certainly the cause.

This guide explains what makes a good H15 replacement, what to avoid when buying, and how to replace them on the Transit Custom.

Why the H15 bulb is different to most

The H15 is a dual-filament bulb — one filament runs at low wattage for the DRL, the other at higher wattage for the main beam. Most aftermarket H15 LED bulbs available online only perform well on the DRL filament. When switched to main beam they lack the output needed to properly illuminate the road ahead, which is both a safety issue and an MOT concern.

This is why choosing the right H15 replacement matters more than it might for a standard headlight bulb.

Which H15 bulb is right for you?

We stock three types of H15 bulb for the Ford Transit Custom — the right choice depends on your budget and what you're looking to get out of the upgrade.

Standard H15 halogen

A direct like-for-like OEM replacement. Restores your DRL and main beam to factory specification. The most affordable option and the easiest choice if you simply need to get back on the road.

Performance H15 halogen

Still a halogen bulb but with an enhanced white light output — closer to the crisp white appearance of LED without the cost. A popular middle-ground option for drivers who want a cleaner look without changing technology.

H15 LED

The biggest upgrade in terms of brightness and longevity. Our H15 LED is one of the few on the market that genuinely performs on both DRL and main beam functions — projecting light significantly further up the road than standard halogen.

What to look for in an H15 replacement

  • Dual-function performance — the bulb must perform well on both DRL and main beam, not just one
  • High lumen output on main beam — look for bulbs that have been independently tested at full power
  • Canbus compatibility — the Transit Custom's electronics may flag errors with LED bulbs that draw the wrong current
  • Buy from a specialist — marketplaces like Amazon and eBay are filled with low-quality H15 bulbs that either fail within months or do not perform adequately

XenonsOnline H15 LED DRL bulb

Our H15 LED bulb is one of the few on the market that genuinely performs on both functions. In our own testing it produced a bright, crisp white DRL output and significantly outperformed other bulbs on main beam — projecting light considerably further up the road.

How to replace the H15 bulb on a Ford Transit Custom

The H15 on the Transit Custom is accessible from the engine bay without removing the headlight unit on most model years — making this a straightforward job. However removing the headlight doesn't take long at all and can make installation even easier.

  1. Switch off the ignition — always work with the ignition off
  2. Open the bonnet and locate the rear of the headlight unit on the side you're replacing
  3. Remove the rubber dust cover — locate the rubber tab, grip firmly and pull off
  4. Remove the H15 bulb — the bulb is held into the headlight with locating tabs at the base. Rotate anti-clockwise and the bulb along with the wiring will come away from the headlight
  5. Disconnect the wiring connector — pull the bulb firmly away from the connector. Do not hold the glass of the bulb
  6. Connect the new bulb to the wiring connector — the H15 has 3 pins, two closer together and one spaced further apart. Match the pin spacing to the socket and press together firmly. Some Transit Customs may require a small modification to the connector when fitting LED bulbs — see the note below
  7. Insert the new H15 bulb into the headlight — align the locating tabs and rotate clockwise until secure
  8. Replace the dust cover — press the cover firmly onto the back of the headlight ensuring it is snug and uniform all the way around
  9. Test before closing the bonnet — check both DRL and main beam are working correctly

Please note — some Pre Facelift Ford Transit Customs have additional plastic tabs on the H15 bulb connector that prevent LED bulbs from seating correctly. If you find the connector won't fit firmly onto the LED bulb, inspect the connector for any excess plastic tabs and carefully trim them away using a pair of wire cutters or a sharp blade. Once trimmed the bulb will seat and lock as normal. Trimming the plastic tabs does not alter the function of the connector in any way.

Frequently asked questions

Will any H15 LED bulb work on the Ford Transit Custom?

Not all H15 LEDs are equal. Many perform adequately on DRL but fail to produce enough output on main beam. Always buy from a specialist who has tested the bulb on both functions.

Will my Transit Custom show a bulb error after fitting an LED?

Our H15 LEDs are canbus compatible and should not trigger any error warnings on the Transit Custom.

Do I need to replace both H15 bulbs at the same time?

If replacing with a standard halogen you can replace just the one. When upgrading to our Performance Halogen or LED you will need to replace both at the same time for consistent light output and appearance.

Which years of Ford Transit Custom use the H15 bulb?

The H15 DRL/main beam bulb is used on the Ford Transit Custom Pre Facelift from 2012–2018.
