D3S Headlight Bulbs

D3S Xenon vs D3S LED — Which Headlight Bulb Do You Need?

If your D3S headlight bulbs need replacing, you have two options — stick with OEM Xenon HID replacements or upgrade to LED. This guide covers everything you need to know to make the right choice for your vehicle, including how to replace them yourself.

What are D3S headlight bulbs?

D3S headlight bulbs are High-Intensity Discharge (HID) Xenon bulbs that operate at 35W and produce a brighter, whiter light than halogen bulbs. They are commonly used in factory-installed HID systems and are the standard OEM replacement for vehicles that came with Xenon headlights from the factory.

When should you replace your D3S bulbs?

Even though D3S Xenon HID bulbs last longer than halogen, they gradually lose brightness over time. Signs that replacement is needed include:

  • Dim or flickering headlights
  • Colour shift — turning pink or purple
  • Complete failure — always replace in pairs

Choosing the right colour temperature

D3S Xenon bulbs are available in different colour temperatures. Choosing the right one depends on your preference and driving conditions:

  • 4300K — warm white, OEM standard, best all-round visibility
  • 5000K — pure white, brighter and crisper than OEM
  • 6000K+ — blue-white, stylish appearance but can reduce visibility in fog and rain

Should you upgrade to D3S LED?

If your D3S Xenon bulbs have failed, it's worth considering an LED upgrade at the same time. Our D3S LED bulbs are a direct replacement and offer several advantages over standard Xenon HID.

XenonsOnline D3S LED headlight bulbs pair

1. Increased brightness and better visibility

  • LED bulbs provide a brighter, more focused beam pattern, improving night-time visibility
  • They produce a whiter, more natural light (6000K–6500K) that closely resembles daylight, reducing eye strain
  • Better illumination of road signs, pedestrians, and potential hazards

2. Much longer lifespan

  • LED bulbs last 30,000–50,000 hours, compared to 3,000–5,000 hours for Xenon HID
  • Less frequent replacements mean lower maintenance costs over time

3. Instant full brightness

  • HID bulbs take a few seconds to warm up — LED bulbs reach full brightness instantly
  • Particularly useful for high-beam applications where immediate light output is important

4. No flickering or colour shifts

  • Ageing HID bulbs often develop flickering or shift in colour, typically turning pink or purple — usually a sign of imminent failure
  • LED technology maintains consistent colour output throughout its lifespan

5. More durable and shock-resistant

  • LED bulbs use solid-state components, making them more resistant to vibrations and road impacts
  • HID bulbs rely on a fragile gas chamber which can be prone to damage over time

6. Better cold weather performance

  • HID bulbs can struggle in cold temperatures, requiring longer warm-up times before reaching full brightness
  • LED bulbs perform consistently in all weather conditions

How to replace D3S headlight bulbs

The process varies between makes and models, but the general steps are the same whether you're fitting Xenon or LED replacements.

  1. Turn off the engine and disconnect the battery — always ensure safety before working on your vehicle's electrical system
  2. Check access options — most vehicles allow access directly from the rear of the headlight. On some models you can access through the wheel arch by turning the wheel and removing the cover
  3. Remove the headlight assembly if required — some vehicles require removing the entire headlight unit, which can be as simple as two bolts, or as involved as removing the front bumper. Always research your specific vehicle before attempting this. If in doubt, purchase the bulbs from us and supply them to a professional installer
  4. Remove the power cable — squeeze the sides of the connector and pull
  5. Remove the old bulb — twist and carefully pull out the old D3S bulb. Avoid touching the glass with bare hands
  6. Install the new bulb — insert the new D3S bulb securely
  7. Reattach the power cable — squeeze the sides and push firmly onto the bulb until it clicks
  8. Test before reassembling — turn on your headlights to confirm both are working before putting everything back together

If the bulbs don't illuminate after installation, the ballast that operates the Xenon system may have failed. Ballasts are usually located underneath or behind the headlight unit. Note down any product codes on the ballast so you can match the correct replacement.

Frequently asked questions

Are D3S bulbs the same as D3R?

No. D3S bulbs are designed for projector headlight housings, while D3R bulbs are for reflector housings. Using the wrong type will result in a poor beam pattern. Always check which type your vehicle requires before purchasing.

Do I need to replace both D3S bulbs at the same time?

Yes. Even if only one bulb has failed, the other is likely near the end of its life too. Replacing both at the same time ensures consistent light output and avoids a second roadside failure shortly after.

Are D3S LED bulbs road legal in the UK?

Our D3S LED bulbs are E-marked and road legal for use on UK roads.

Will D3S LED bulbs work with my existing ballast?

No. D3S LED bulbs bypass the ballast entirely and connect directly to the vehicle's wiring. The ballast is no longer needed.

How do I know if my ballast has failed?

If new bulbs don't illuminate after installation, the ballast is the most likely cause. Signs of ballast failure include flickering lights, delayed start-up, or complete non-operation.
